The model is very powerful through its simplicity. C.G.Jung observed during his work in psychology at the beginning of the 20th century that for as different humans can be, we all have a few important common functionalities: He first identified two basic opposed approaches to the world that he named Extraversion and Intraversion. This is the first dichotomy (set of two mutually excluding choices) in the model and tells us where we get our energy from. He then observed that we all have and use four functions which he arranged in two additional dichotomies: The Perceiving Functions (Sensing and iNtuition) and the Judging functions (Thinking and Feeling). Finally he observed that we have a specific preferred function that we like to apply to the outer world. The last dichotomy is whether this function is our preferred Judging or Perceiving function determined in the previous two dichotomies. These are the four dimensions observed by C.G.Jung and measured by the model. The model simplifies the world assuming the preference is an (unconscious) choice for either side of each dichotomy. In reality it is more like left and right hand: we have them both but use a specific one for specific tasks it is better trained at. Take the test and find out yourself about your preferences. Read more about the four dimensions and the history of personality type.
